About CATSC
The Catholic Association of Teachers, Schools & Colleges (CATSC) was founded in 1996 with the blessing of Cardinal Basil Hume, who commended it as a vital continuation of a rich tradition in Catholic education. He recognised the role of Catholic teachers in the Church’s mission, expressing confidence that the Association would represent, support, and unite its members in faith and professional life.
CATSC was formed through the merger of three long-established organisations:
The Association of Catholic Schools & Colleges (ACSC), originally the Conference of Catholic Secondary Schools & Colleges (CCSSC), founded in 1896
The Catholic Teachers’ Federation (CTF), founded in 1907 in Manchester
The Association for Religious in Education (ARE), established in 1929
These groups had worked across the independent and maintained sectors, from primary through to higher education, advocating for Catholic teachers and schools for nearly a century.
In continuing that legacy, CATSC brings together educators to support and promote the distinctive mission of Catholic education across the UK.
